July is upon us and the heat of summer is here. When the temperature outside hits the upper 90’s and 100’s, that means that the heat on the asphalt can get up to 300°F or more. Heat-related illnesses are serious business, causing serious illnesses or even death.
Safety is DRYCO’s number one priority… and keeping our workers cool is just one of the ways in which we ensure that. Since heat can lead to other issues and potential incidents, it is important that all of us working in the heat take care to avoid heat illness issues. Here are 12 tips to avoid heat illness from For Construction Pros:
- Water, water, everywhere. Drink plenty of proper fluids the night before a work day and continue to drink fluids (i.e., water or sport drinks) throughout the day. Remember that we not only need water, but electrolytes, which can be gained from drinking sport drinks in addition to water. Plan to make water easy to reach and keep it at a cool, drinkable temperature. Provide electrolyte replacement beverages. Avoid soda pop and energy drinks.
